Photographic Archive
The Photographic Archive was established in 1985 and is built around a large collection of historical photographs collected by the late P. S. H. Lawrence, a former master at Eton. These date back as far as 1850 and provide a visual record of the school’s development over the last 160 years. The most significant of these photographs are reproduced in two volumes of An Eton Camera by Mr Lawrence, the first volume covering the years 1850–1919, and the second 1920–1959.
It is the policy of the Photographic Archive to make its resources available to individuals featured in the photographs, to their families, and to serious, bona fide research scholars. It is normal for enquirers to be asked for an explanation of their research interest. No photographs of people still alive are released unless agreement is given by those featured in the photographs. Charges are made for the supply of photographs. The exact sum depends on the nature of the image required and in what context it is to be used. Enquiries may be made to the secretary of the Photographic Archive, on 01753 671238. Click here to email.
A major project has recently been started to digitise the entire collection for purposes of conservation and for easier accessibility.
